The common denominator of this volume is contemporary Chinese photography, whose role in the transformation of artistic practices in this country has been essential, as Wu Hung and Christoffer Phillips demonstrated in the project “Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China ” (2000) for the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago and the International Center of Photography in New York. The book brings together the work of six contemporary Chinese artists (Liu Zheng, Yan Huang, An Hong, Wang Qingsong, Yang Fudong, and Zhang Huan) who are among the most representative of this new photography, which they understand as a key instrument in the creation of new languages based on any support that adapts to the artist's intentionality. They all share an academic training, in which the teaching of painting has predominated and where photography lacked the importance that it subsequently had and has in China, as an artistic practice paradoxically more pictorial than painting itself.
