Spain and the Philippines share a rich historical legacy in common, which has intensified in recent years due to greater institutional collaboration and cultural exchange between both nations. This publication allows us an approach to the history of modern and contemporary art in the Philippines, and invites us to reflect on the richness and complexity of our own collective memory. The volume is divided into two parts: on the one hand, texts on art criticism from a postcolonial theory perspective divided into three themes: “Art”, which collects texts on the history of art in the Philippines; “Identity,” which integrates testimonies from Filipino artists; and “Postcolonial Discourse”, a compilation of several articles written from this theoretical postulate. The publication also includes a DVD that brings together a series of interviews with prominent Filipino intellectuals and an alternative guide to the city and culture of Manila by Jaime Gil. The book was presented at the IV Philippine – Spain Tribune held in 2008 in Cebu City, Philippines.
