"Reza", Best Film of Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2019

“Reza” (Iran, 2018), Alireza Motamedi’s first full-length film, received the best movie award of the official section in competition of the 7th edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN). Devashish Makhija received the best filmmaker award for “Bhonsle” (India, 2018), which, in turn, also obtained the best script award; likewise, the jury awarded a special mention to “Blue Hour” (Japan, 2019), by Yuko Hakota.

The AFFBCN 2019 gathered four international juries and one young jury who awarded, respectively, the following awards in each of their corresponding sections: Official Panorama, Discoveries, Netpac and Special, all of them in competition.

Oficial Panorama Section: Best movie award for “The Girl and the Sea” (Kazakhstan, 2017) directed by A. Zairov and M. Mamyrbekov; best filmmaker award to Zhenyu Sun for the movie “Pure Land” (China, 2018); best script award for “The Dark Room” (Iran, 2018) by Rouhollah Hejazi, and a special mention to the director Batbayar Chogsom for “Out of Paradise” (Mongolia, 2018).

Discoveries Section: Best movie award for “Temporary Visa” (Singapore, 2018) by Ghazi Alqudcy; best filmmaker award to Shahram Mokri for “Invasion” (Iran, 2017); best script award for “Only The Cat Knows” (Japan, 2019) by Shōtarō Kobayashi, and a special mention for “A Letter to the President” (Afghanistan, 2017) by Roya Sadat.

Netpac Section: Best movie award for “Father and Son” (Vietnam, 2017) by Dung Luong Dinh, and a special mention for “School Service” (Philippines, 2018) by Luisito Lagdameo.

Special Section: Best movie award for “The Breadwinner” (Afghanistan, 2017) by Nora Twomey; best filmmaker award to Puangsoi Aksornsawang for “Nakorn-Sawan” (Thailand, 2018), and best script award for “The Ghost (Aruakh)” (Kazakhstan, 2018) by Khuat Akhmetov.

Twice in a row, the festival presented the nine full-length films more awarded at the Asian Film Awards 2019 which the Asian Film Awards Academy, established in Hong Kong, awards annually; among them, “Ayka” (Kazakhstan | China, 2018) by the Kazakhstani director Sergey Dvortsevoy, that raised the curtain with a special session the 30th October; “Still Human” (Hong Kong, 2018) by the producer Oliver Siu Kuen Chan, which inaugurated the contest, and the full-length film “Dying to Survive” (China, 2018) by the filmmaker Muye Wen, that closed down the AFFBCN 2019. This year, the Retrospective section, hosted by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, was dedicated to the Japanese filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu.

With these awards, this year’s AFFBCN edition, competition that is specialized in Asian cinema, comes to an end. An edition that had scheduled 130 movies from 25 Asian countries, which were projected at Cinemes Girona, CaixaFourum and Filmoteca de Catalunya from the 30th October to the 10th November, and since the 4th October with a preview of the program through the OFF Festival.

Casa Asia expresses its gratitude to all those that enabled the celebration of this year’s Asian Film Festival, and renews its commitment to ensure that Barcelona has at its disposal a festival that gathers the best filmography coming from the Asian continent and facilitates the audience’s access to the productions from this part of the world, as well as the encounter between professionals of the area and the cinematographic industry.
