Asian cinema arrives in Barcelona with a new AFFBCN edition

Fans of Asian cinema have a new date with the best specialised contest of long films from Asia: Asian Film Festival Barcelona|AFFBCN. Between the 31 of October to 11th of November, this festival will hold its 6th edition with around a hundred films from more than 20 countries -from Central Asia to New Zealand- that will be screened at Girona Cinema, CaixaForum and Filmoteca de Catalunya.

This year's AFFBCN programme is distributed into 6 sections: Official, Official Panorama, Netpac, Discoveries, Special and Retrospective. They all compete except for this last one. The Retrospective section is devoted to the Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda, winner of the Palm D'Or in Cannes 2018 with “Shoplifters”, long film that will open the VI Asian Film Festival Barcelona next 7th of November at Cinemes Girona.

The pre-opening session will be held at CaixaForum with the film “Suleiman Montain” (Kyrgyzstan/2017) by the director Elizaveta Stishova together with a dozen films, whereas Filmoteca de Catalunya will screen a part of the retrospective devoted to Hirozaku Kore-eda. Cinemes Girona will host most of the festival's films, as well as the aforementioned opening session “Shoplifters” and the closing session with “Last child” (Korea/2017) directed by Shin Dong-seok.

For the first time in this festival long films from Macao will be added to the filmography from Iran, China, Japan, Korea and India and to films from countries such as Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. These films will offer a contemporary portray of rural and urban Asian society and drama is the most represented genre. However, AFFBCN also includes animation films addressed to the adult public and to children.

Asian Film Festival Barcelona will grant a total of 15 awards: Award to the Best Film, Best Director and Best Script for every one of the competing sections, as well as the Award of the Public and of the Youth Jury. As a novelty this edition the awards of the Asian Film Academy (AFA) will also be granted.

These prizes will be granted by 5 juries: Official Section, Official Panorama, Discoveries, Netpac and Youth juries. The jury is made up of Roger García (AFA), Joan Sala, Filmin producer (Barcelona), Kazi Abdur Rahim, director of Festival Imagine India, Carlos Benitez and Montse Rovira (film critics), Jean Marie del Moral, photographer, Paco Poch, film director and producer, Iván Llamas, producer, and Xavi Lezcano, director of Americana Film Festival.

AFFBCN 2018 will count on the presence of the following film directors: Tomoko Takahashi, (Japan), Chang Tai-li (Hong Kong), Harvan Agustriasyah (Indonesia), Elizavets Stishova (Kyrgyzstan), Do Kyun Kim (Korea) and Chandra Ray (Bhutan).

“Shoplifters“ by Hirozaku Kore-eda, opens the Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2018

This drama, directed by the Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda, will open on the 7th of November at Cinemes Girona the sixth edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona. This long film has won this year's Cannes Palm D'Or and it has been the film sent to Japan for the Oscars to compete in the category of "Best Foreign Language Film".

The direction of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona highlights these 10 films out of the hundred films as well as the opening and closing film: Our Time will come (Hong Kong/2017), The Third Wife (Vietnam/2018), Black Kite (Afghanistan/2017), Kia and Cosmos (India/2018), February (Korea/2017), Lima (Indonesia/2018), Bad genius (Thailand/2017), Rachana (Cambodia/2018), Vida Dwelers (Iran/2017), and As is the purest, the purest white (China/2018).

The Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2018 counts on the support of the Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (ICEC) of Generalitat de Catalunya, Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB) of Barcelona City Council, of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels, Cathay Pacific and We are Water Foundation, Betevé, Radio 4 and El Periódico de Catalunya, among others.

AFFBCN continues once again with its committment for Barcelona to have a festival that brings together the best filmography of the Asian continent and makes access of the Spanish audience to productions of this region easier, as well as the encounter among professionals of the sector and the film industry. Casa Asia's turn to Asian cinema is firm, not only with this festival, but also with its weekly programme that it carries out throughout the year in Barcelona with Cinemes Girona and in Madrid with Filmoteca Española, CaixaForum and Círculo de Bellas Artes.
