150 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Spain and Japan

Spain and Japan this year celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Owing to this event, throughout 2018 a programme with high level meetings, economic and cultural activities and among the civil societies with exhibitions, festivals, artistic representations and seminars in both countries will be held, according to communication of the Diplomatic Information Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

Commemorations of the anniversary come from a Spanish-Japanese joint initiative addressed to intensify and revalue bilateral relations in all fields. The official opening ceremony of the 150th anniversary in Spain took place last 16th of January in Madrid and 23rd of January in Tokyo, with the participation of Spanish and Japanese authorities and personalities of civil life linked to the promotion of bilateral relations.

This commemoration is produced in a prominent moment for bilateral relations after the new cycle begun with the State trip of Their Royal Highness the King and Queen on Spain to Japan in April 2017, where the good relationship between both countries and their more and more important bond regarding economic and commercial fields, as well as science and technology among both civil socieites was shown.

Japan is currently the second commercial partner of Spain in Asia and Spain is the 6th supplier of Japan among the countries of the EU. In 2016 the figure of 6.000 million Euros was increased in commercial exchanges and number of Japanese visitors in Spain reached 473.000 turistas, placing Japan as the main issuing market of Asian tourists in Spain. Around 100.000 Spanish people visited Japan last year.

Even though this anniversary is commemorated in 2018, historical relations among both countries go back to 1549, with the arrival of San Francisco Javier to Kyushu Island, diplomatic relations among Spain and Japan were established on the 12th of November 1868, with the signature of the Hispano-Japanese Treaty of Friendship, Trade and Navigation, in a historical period of deep changes in both countries and shared aspirations of international opening.
