The constitution agreement of the consortium was signed on the 9th of November 2001 within the framework of the objectives established at the 2000-2002 Asia-Pacific Framework Plan. Later, on the 16th of June 2003, Casa Asia opened its headquarters, located at Palau Baró de Quadras in Barcelona. Today, ten years later, we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the foundation of the institution which is why in the course of 2012 we will hold a series of commemorative events.

Casa Asia was created with the will to strengthen the knowledge and dialogue about Asia in Spain, with the analysis and discussion of civic, political, social, cultural, economic and environmental issues, supporting activities and projects that contribute to a better knowledge between Asian and Spanish societies, and to promote the development of relations among them.

Its social headquarters is located in Barcelona, at the Baró de Quadras Palace, a Modernist building made by the architect Puig i Cadafalch catalogued as a National Interest Historical-Artistic Monument, on Diagonal Avenue 373. It consists of a singular building that includes areas that allow to host the different initiatives that Casa Asia develops in the different angles of its task and has become a reference information centre about Asia and the Pacific.

At an official ceremony on the 16th of June 2003, the Prince of Asturias opened the Casa Asia Headquarters, as well as the exhibition “Divine Presence: Arts of India and the Himalayas”.

In September 2005, Casa Asia was able to use a new building, annexed to its headquarters on Diagonal Avenue, where the offices and different services would be installed. The intense activity developed by the institution with courses, seminars, lectures, film series, forums, etc. and the everyday flow of students and researchers in the Media Library have made the extension of its physical space necessary.

With the opening of its new outbuildings in the emblematic building of Miraflores Palace in 2007, the Casa Asia Centre-Madrid was officially presented in this city. Moreover, the centre extended its activities, developed a more complete programme and included its own venue in the capital.
