The East - West Dialogue, a meeting to develop the future of gender equality and development

The 7th edition of the East – West Dialogue has involved a meeting of high level specialists regarding gender and development with the common purpose to achieve the same opportunities for women and men. The most evident conclusion of the Dialogue is that gender differences are still present in all the countries of the world, despite being one of the great challenges of the Goals of the Millennium. Within the context of the Dialogue, the 1st Meeting of Asian and Spanish Women was also held, which closes with the committment to start up a Network of Asian and Spanish Women with their headquarters in Barcelona.

 

At the Dialogue experts and activists of human rights have taken part. Asian and Spanish women of human rights. Asian and Spanish women have debated about issues such as “Gender violence and health”, “Political participation and economic development” and “Education and culture for development”. In developing countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia or Afghanistan, they are struggling in fields such as education, law changes or women empowerment.

A new Network of Women

Within the framework of the closing session of the 1st Meeting of Asian and Spanish Women, the State Secretary of International Cooperation, Soraya Rodríguez, announced the committment of AECID to start up a Network of Asian and Spanish Women with headquarters in Barcelona. The State Secretary of International Cooperation has also affirmed that, despite the economic crisis, the budget appointed to gender equality policies will not be reduced.

Rodríguez has also highlighted the close collaboration with UNIFEM, the Fund of Development of the United Nations for Women that works in oder to promote and protect the rights of women all over the world, to make an agency for gender of the European Union true.
