The Awards Jury Casa Asia 2023, once all the candidacies presented for its 4 categories have been evaluated, as established in its bases, has decided to unanimously award the following candidacies:
- To Masih Alinejad, Iranian journalist, in the Diversity and Sustainable Development category, for her journalistic activity denouncing abuses of power in Iran, and for serving as a speaker in exile for Iranian women against the mandatory use of the 'hijab' and other discriminatory laws.
- To Margaret Chen, Chinese businesswoman, in the Economy and Business category, for her contribution to the rapprochement between China and Spain in the field of business innovation, especially in the telecommunications and start-ups sector, in addition to her support for integration of Chinese managers in Spanish society through the China Club Spain.
- To Guillermo Gómez Rivera and Nick Deocampo, in the Culture and Society category (ex aequo)
- Guillermo Gomez Rivera, director of the Philippine Academy of Language, for his promotion of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures in the Philippines, not only in the different literary genres in which he has written - theater, poetry, novel, short story and essay - but also as an expert ethnographer in the oral traditions of his country.
- Nick Deocampo, Filipino academic, in the Culture and Society category, for his decisive contribution to the knowledge of Philippine cinema and the recovery of classic Filipino cinema in his country, as well as for his commitment to cinema as a tool of change and social progress; for their defense of LGTBQ+ rights, giving a voice to this group in film festivals, workshops and other activities.
- To the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF), in the Education and Science category, for its 25-year track record contributing to promoting mutual understanding and collaboration between civil societies in Asia and Europe.
With this award, the jury recognizes, in particular, ASEF's work in the educational field, where its programs serve as a platform for meetings between young people, and the creation of networks that facilitate collaboration between students, teachers and educators from Asia and Europe.
The Jury was made up of the following people: Javier Parrondo, general director of Casa Asia, Florentino Rodao, professor of Asian History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Anna Terrón, director of FIIAPP and former Secretary of State for Immigration and Emigration, Gabriel Castañares, general director of Lever Policies for the Fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda (Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030), Taciana Fisac, professor of East Asian Studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Immaculate Riera, general director of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Joan Rosàs, director of International Financial Institutions of CaixaBank, Antonio Montes, director of Strategic Development of the Instituto de Empresa – IE Business School and Ángel Sala, director of the Sitges Film Festival
The following people from the jury team have acted as secretaries of the jury (with voice and vote in their respective categories). Casa Asia: Menene Gras in Culture and Society, Ángel Aranguren (representing Gaëlle Patin Laloy) in Diversity and Sustainable Development, Amadeo Jensana in Economy and Business and Rafael Bueno in Education and Science.
This award was established for the first time in 2004. The winners in previous editions have been, among others, the philosopher and thinker Raimon Pannikar, the China-Europe International Business School (CEIBS) of Shanghai, the Spanish Department of the University of Foreign Studies of Beijing, the Spanish Network for the Coordination of NGOs for Development, the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, the journalists Rosa Mª Calaf and Miguel Frau Rovira, the Jesuit Father Enrique Figaredo, the Malaysian NGO «Sisters in Islam» , the sinologist Xulio Ríos, or the Afghan activist Fawzia Koofi.
In 2022, the winners were the engineer Tomás Mazón Serrano, the activists in defense of gender equality in Asia Saurabh Kirpal and Shinta Ratri, Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa, and the sinologist Dolors Folch Fornesa.
The prize consists of 2.000 euros per category, which will be awarded at the awards ceremony during the year 2023 on a date and place that will be announced in advance.
