On the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8), Casa Asia organizes a special program that will take place during the month of March 2023, and will last until the months of April and May with the aim of joining the efforts used to make the situation of women in the Asia-Pacific region visible.  

The consequences of the pandemic can accentuate inequalities and slow down the path towards gender equality. More than ever, collaboration between public and private institutions, together with civil society, is key to raise awareness, make visible and act to achieve goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals: achieve gender equality and empower women and men. the girls.      

The set of scheduled activities includes film sessions, conferences, courses and interviews among others, with which Casa Asia wants to bring closer the reality of women in the Asia-Pacific region, and learn about the challenges they face in a world that is still unequal in terms of rights and gender equality.

Round table: “The voice of Afghan women from exile” 


Tuesday, March 7, 2023, from 19 to 20:30 p.m. 

On the occasion of International Women's Day, we will give a voice to the women and girls who have been exiled from Afghanistan due to the new laws imposed by the Taliban government. Various testimonies will tell us about the constant violations of women's rights that they suffer in their country. The Granollers City Council and Casa Asia, with the collaboration of the Barcelona Provincial Council, organize this round table “The voice of Afghan women from exile” in which two Afghan women currently refugees in Spain will participate, Khadija Zahra Ahmadi, former mayor of the town of Nili and Khadija Amin, journalist and feminist. In addition, we will have the participation of Queralt Puigoriol, activist of the Afghan Women on the Run movement and of Mayte Carrasco, journalist, war reporter, documentary director and writer, who will moderate the round table and give a brief introduction to the past and present situation of Afghan women.

Activity “Who is who?” AFEX-AFFM program


From March 6 to 10 

The week of March 8 we celebrate International Women's Day with all the groups of the AFEX-AFFM program of Casa Asia with the game "Who is who?" of women who have stood out especially in the Asian continent in different fields (culture, literature, sports, social activism, politics, art and science) and we will analyze the causes that cause there to be fewer women with international recognition and less of Asian origin compared to recognized men. The game created by Casa Asia It helps the program participants, mostly Asian mothers, to become aware of the invisibility of women's contributions in many different fields, throughout history, as well as to analyze the rights they have as women and be able to demand them.

Synopsis: 

Claudia is 16 years old and has grown up isolated from the outside world. Lost after the death of her mother, she is surprised when Grace appears in the garden like a mirage that gradually turns into a breath of fresh air. After overcoming their resistance, both protagonists manage to find the support, love and intimacy they need, and teach each other the restorative power of human connection. But their idyllic peace is fragile as the adult world closes in and threatens the existence of this secret summer love.  

About the director: 

Katie Found is a screenwriter and director based in Melbourne. Her first feature film, My First Summer, premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival and screened at numerous festivals including BFI Flare, Inside Out and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. She received glowing reviews in The Sydney Morning Herald, The New York Times, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, ABC and Time Out. Prior to this explosive reception of her work, her short film The Widow received funding from Screen NSW, and was developed through Metro Screen's First Breaks program and screened at film festivals nationally and internationally.

Synopsis: 

Along The Way is the moving story of two refugees who want to reach Europe. This film arises from volunteer work that director De Jong did years ago in the Moria refugee camp, Lesvos (Greece). There she met Afghan twins Nahid and Malihe. Her story moved her so much that she decided to make this film with her help, addressing the experiences of the protagonists, Fatima and Nahra, from their departure from Afghanistan to Istanbul. Her dream was to go to Greece to become a filmmaker.  

About the director: 

Mijke De Jong (Rotterdam, 1959) is a Dutch film director, screenwriter and producer. She is known for films such as Bluebird (2004), Frailer (2014), Layla M. (2016) and God Only Knows (2019). The themes that De Jong mainly addresses in her work are related to everyday life in society, from bullying, to belonging or death. She essentially portrays emotions that accompany these struggles.

Webinar “Gender and Japanese cinema: constructing the figure of the “film director”

The growing presence of Japanese directors at international film festivals is helping to change how Japan, its cinema and its women are perceived in the rest of the world. But the label “film director” (女性監督) is still sometimes associated with gender stereotypes. This paper analyzes the case of Tanaka Kinuyo, the first Japanese woman to regularly direct fiction feature films (six between 1953 and 1962) and whose filmography is being revalued worldwide in recent years, to explore the narratives of gender, authorship and nation that converge in how she was and is talked about as a “female director”. 


Online course "Women in the floating world   


Wednesdays May 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 18:30 p.m. to 20 p.m. 

This course will focus on the role of women during the Edo period (1603-1868) and its impact in subsequent decades. To do this, we will focus on her representation in woodcut prints, as well as on women ukiyo-e artists. It will therefore consist of taking a tour of this historical period, learning about the development of this engraving technique, its themes and styles from its beginnings to its later development and, of course, focusing on the female figures who worked in this discipline. Afghan Women's Task Force  


Casa Asia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and different Associations, facilitates a meeting space for Afghan women residing in Spain in which they can discuss topics of interest to them. 

The working group, in which around 35 Afghan women participate, aims to define the issues that concern them and what their contribution can be, within the framework established by the HearUs conference. 

The meetings will be scheduled periodically, the first having been held on February 10, 2023 in Casa Asia Madrid

Translator, interpreter and cultural disseminator, of Iranian origin. She has a master's degree in conference interpretation and has worked as an interpreter for the United Nations, the European Union, and the presidential offices of more than 15 countries around the world.

She has combined social activism with her role as a disseminator on issues related to human rights, and especially women's rights. She works as an advisor for organizations such as the Nobel Peace Women and organizations creating campaigns for human rights in Iran.

has reported the imprisonment of women and men writers from their country who have taken a stand in defense of coexistence between different religions in Iran, as is the case of Mahvash Sabet and Mehdi Bahman.
