How does the Chinese innovation system work? What can we learn from its effective development? How can China and Spain collaborate in R&D&I? These are some of the questions answered by the report “China Innovates. Technological innovation ecosystems in China” with the main objective of identifying ways of collaboration with Chinese innovation ecosystems for the development of joint projects.
The report identifies those sectors of technological innovation that offer more possibilities of cooperation for research agents in Europe, as well as the challenges that the rise of China as a technological superpower poses for Europe and, more specifically, for Spain, and incorporates the contributions from people who are working in the field of innovation in China, either undertaking or researching.
More specifically, the study offers an overview of the main actors, policies, instruments, centers, and trends in innovation, as well as the entrepreneurship ecosystem in China. It includes contributions on specific areas, such as improving food security based on blockchain (fourth chapter); Artificial Intelligence (fifth chapter); or the aeronautical industry (sixth chapter). Finally, the study analyzes the digital and social change that is taking place in China, and that has turned the country into a constantly growing market.
As the study states: “With regard to the results and degree of competitiveness of the Chinese innovation system compared to the European one, the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS, 2021) highlights that China maintains its position as a “moderate innovator.” ” according to EU parameters and that, although Europe maintains a slight advantage at a general level, this advantage is increasingly smaller, because the PRC is one of the countries that has advanced most rapidly in the performance of its innovation system between 2014 and 2020.
This report has been carried out by Casa Asia and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, with the collaboration of the Fundació Institut Confuci of Barcelona.
