On May 16, we held a class on the “Aprenem” program. Families in Network” (AFEX) with a group of adult students, volunteer students from the Consell de Cent institutes in Barcelona and the Rubió and Ors institutes in Hospitalet, together with their facilitators, at the National Museum of Art of Catalonia in Barcelona. This opportunity was the result of the collaboration between the Bamboo School of Casa Asia and the MNAC, which has now lasted three years.
For all participants, this visit was the first time they had explored this museum and its surroundings. On this occasion, we focus on the collection of Renaissance and Baroque art. Esther Fuertes, from the Department of Education, energized a debate using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). During the discussion, various perspectives on the works and characters on display were gathered. In addition, vocabulary related to fruits, clothing and the context of the images was practiced. Some cultural practices also emerged that participants compared with their knowledge of their own cultures of origin, while learning about the art of that time. The visit aroused great interest and left me wanting to return to the museum in the future.
What is AFEX?
The AFEX program is made up of three key elements: a) Adult students, who are relatives of the center's students who want to learn Catalan, Spanish and computer science to, among other things, be able to communicate with the teachers and guardians of their sons and daughters. . Family members participate in AFEX-AFFM, especially mothers, from very diverse origins, mainly Asian, although there are also people from Africa, Central and South America, and Eastern European countries. b) The volunteers are high school students from the center, who teach them. Some volunteers are familiar to the adult students as they speak their native languages. This allows our classes to be multilingual and multilevel. Multilingual because they learn Catalan and Spanish from their mother tongue, showing that language learning is not from scratch, but rather that previous knowledge and experiences can be taken advantage of. And multilevel, because each volunteer can be paired with an adult student and advance in learning at her own pace. c) Facilitator, is the person who is in charge of organizing the classes and guiding the volunteers in their teaching. In addition to Catalan and Spanish, she speaks one of the majority mother tongues of the group.
