Workshop: "Japanese Sabadario"

Getafe (Madrid)

Ichi-go ichi-e (一期一会 literally “one time, one encounter”) is a Japanese aphorism that describes a cultural concept often linked to the famous tea master, Sen no Rikyu. The term is normally translated as “only this time” or “every encounter is unique”. This workshop proposes: a unique encounter, unrepeatable on every occasion, where Japanese music and calligraphy are gathered live with poetry and drawing.

A dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity, what's sonorous, visual and word, East and West, what's composed and improvised, among others, and an invitation to take part listening, looking, writing and a introductory practice to Japanese poem calligraphy.

Methodology: poetry and calligraphy workshop with music

Content: those who give form to Ichigoichie are fascinated by the other, the others: a Hispano-Argentinian master of Shakuhachi, a Japanese shodo sensei who teaches calligraphy in Madrid, a musician who translates koto sheets of music into the sonority of the Spanish guitar, a visual artist that unlearns shodo doing improvised abstract drawing, a poet from Madrid captivated by haiku.

Together we propose to enter the length and movement of the poem. With the help of the look and paintbrush of Marta Azparren regarding “ideograms without evocation” by Henri Michaux; of the musical reflection generated in Rodrigo Rodríguez around the life and work of Ikkyu Sojun, zen monk, musician, poet, tramp; of musical improvisation as art: Rodrigo on the shakukachi and Enrique Pastor on the guitar, both guided by their passion and knowledge on Japanese music and for the spirit of calligraphy and drawing; of the tanka and haiku selection of Madoka Kubota, who for years has taken care of it for shodo spreading in Spain; or of the contact of one of the secrets of haiku mentioned by Vicente Haya in Aware: “that invisible relation among things, beings”, invisible relations that during this workshop we will try to turn into audible, gestual, unraveled and moving relations.
