Encounter with the Writer David Loy: “Why does Buddhism and the Modern World need each other?”

“¿Por qué el budismo y el mundo moderno se necesitan mutuamente?”

The main purpose of the Western tradition has consisted of restructuring our societies so they are fairer socially speaking. The most important purpose of Buddhism consists of awakening and carrying out our own nature to end suffering. It is clear today that both approaches are necessary, not because they complement each other, buy because they need each other.

The western ideal (already international) of social transformation that institutionalises social justice has reached great achievements; however, it's limited because a genuinely good-natured society cannot be achieved without the correlative transformation or personal self-fulfilment. That's where the Buddhist perspective, with its emphasis in suffering as an I dissociated from others (and that is exploited by consumerism and economic structures), can contribute a new dimension.

David Loy is teacher of Ethics, Religion and Society at University of Bunkyo, Japan. He has been Zen practitioner for more than 20 years until he became a teacher. He is author of many articles and of the books Nonduality, The Great Awakening and Money, Sex, War and Karma.

The encounter will be in English with consecutive translation.
