Roundtable: “Hong Sang-soo's Cinema”

Mesa redonda: “El cine de Hong Sang-soo” IMG2

Casa Asia holds a gathering on the Korean film-maker Hong Sang-soo owing to the publication of the study carried out by Gloria Fernández and Enrique Garcelán (CineAsia) and published by the Gijón International Film Festival.

Born in 1960, Hong Sang-soo debuted as a director in 1996 with the film The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well, for which he was awarded at festivals such as Vancouver and Rotterdam. In less than 20 years, he has directed 16 films, almost all of them with his script, that have achieved recognition at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno or Rotterdam, among others.

The Korean director, Post-modernist and Post-structuralist, recognised in Europe as a representatative of the Eastern Nouvelle Vague, became the centre of the past Gijón International Film Festival. The festival devoted a retrospective to his cinema where 8 of his productions were presented, as well as the book launch of El cine de Hong Sang-soo. Despite the success achieved on an international level, in him hometown his cinema is considered cult cinema, away from the reality for most spectators. The opulence of the cinematographic industry of Korean generates around 1.100 million dollars per year. However, this film maker moves away from commercial films, which is very popular in his countro of origin, and he turns to a cinema that portrays the society he lives in, inviting us to think about life, love, sex, truth, lies and death.
