Performance: "Saju", by Sooyoung Lee

Casa Asia, in collaboration with Hangar and SAS Geumcheon, presents the performance of the Korean artist Sooyoung Lee, who ends her stay in Barcelona with the presentation of a project in process that she will carry out at our headquarters. The proposal consists of installing an “Office of Good Fortune”, where the artist can predict the future to all those who would like to take part in the project.

The procedure she uses is that in South Korea she is known as “Saju”: This model is characterized by being based on “four pillars” constituted by the year, the month, the day and the time of birth, because she considers that these dates directly influence the fate of all human beings.

The artist will then predict good fortune, once she knows the aforementioned information about applicants, who must verbally express a wish. Every session will last between 10 and 20 minutes and then the artist will draw the map of the wish of her interlocutor and will say something regarding their fate. In exchange, those interested will offer a personal object – a pen, a handkerchief, a sweet, an old bus ticket or anything else. The day will end at the auditorium of Casa Asia with a presentation about the result of her experiences during the day.

Sooyoung Lee is not a “fortune-teller” and she does not read the future profesionally with a crystal  ball. She is an artist and would like to continue being one; she considers that her performative work must be understood as an experience, communication and transmission. Likewise, she understands her actions as part of an “expanded” process, for which she comes in contact with the public to understand her production wishing, from which she conceives her own work, that it derives from an unavoidable social committment.

Sooyoung Lee was born and lives in Seoul, South Korea. She studied Fine Arts at the National University of Seoul and studied a Master's degree in Fine Arts at the Queens College of New York. She currently lives in Barcelona, as a resident artist of Hangar. Her work is mainly based on archives and documentation. She has offered exhibitions in empty houses, empty shops, supermarkets, office buildings, public toilettes, as well as in galleries and museums of Seoul, Uzbekistan and Dusseldorf, among others.
