Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy, is the art of writing Japanese characters, Kanji and Kana with brushes and Japanese ink on rice paper. Shodo literally means “The path of writing” and has a very important spiritual and artistic component.
The objective of this course focuses on reading, understanding and experimenting with the poetic text to try to capture the feeling of the Haiku, a short poem, through calligraphic writing.
It is not essential to have prior knowledge of Japanese calligraphy, but if you do, you are also welcome! We will work and enjoy in small groups, so the disparity in levels will enrich the experience.
Through calligraphy, the student will get to know the life and work of various authors ranging from the Nara era to modern Japan, in a marriage of calligraphy and literature that will allow us to have a different experience of Japan.
Important note on materials:
Students must acquire the materials on their own. The set should include: fine brush, thick brush, liquid ink (or ink stick), tablecloth, inkwell, and Hanshi size paper.
