The nomadic pastoralist tribes of Central Asia carry out daily survival activities that have prevented social stratification by class or gender to a certain extent. Mongolian women have apparently participated equally in all the collective tasks of their community. However, patriarchy in the Mongolian steppe has traditionally adopted clear forms of power based on symbolic dichotomies over housing (yurt), work with herds and intertribal contact networks.

We are witnessing a progressive marginalization of Mongolian women from ancient times in which they developed central social roles, such as shamanic activities, until the 20th century that attempted to convert them into "housewives" of a new urban sedentary society. But the contradictions and shortcomings of modernity in Mongolia have today opened unexpected opportunities of empowerment for women of this culture.

Programme:

1 session: Pastorwomen and shamans. Women in traditional Mongolian society.
Session 2: Warriors and consorts. Women in the Mongol Empire.

Session 4: Survivors and entrepreneurs. Women in the Mongolia of globalization.
